And what if you paid with cash and not check with no way to prove it?

Can you write it off only if you used a check?

I got a year end statement from my parish. And it is tithes. The offerings are tax deductible if you are itemizing under charity. There is a limit.

Tithes and offerings are deductible under cash donations, if you itemize such things under Schedule A of Form 1040.

The only way you could donate cash in bills is if you had put them in a tithe envelope and mark it w/ your name so that the church treasurer can issue a receipt at the end of the year w/ all of your donations listed. No making change in the offering plate.

They are deductible if you itemize your deductions.

For 2006, cash donations are fine but for 2007 and forward you will need a receipt and/or canceled check.

You can claim them as charitable contributions if you itemize.

For cash donations, you can claim them but if you can't prove them, they might be disallowed if you are audited. The rules are changing - starting in 2007, you can only claim charitable deductions for which you have receipts.
