These are definitely symptoms of a bite from a bug. You said there are bedbugs in your building, right? I hear that there is an increase in people encountering them. You know they carry bubonic plague, right?

Relax! The first thing you need to do is go and get a plastic mattress cover for you mattress AND your box spring. If you have bedbugs you will see them in the crease on the edge of the mattress & under the box spring. They are tiny black bugs. It is doubtful that you would have one bit and even less likely it would be on your face. You would have a clusters of bites on your arms and legs. DO NOT let anyone that lives in your building to even walk into your apartment. This includes supers and landlords. That is how they spread - on other people. If you do find them in your mattress, then the mattress & boxspring have to go. Cover both with a bottom sheet. One covering the top & one covering the bottom of the mattress AND one covering the top & another covering the bottom of the box spring. Then get it out of the apartment. You will have to take everything out of room and have it sprayed by professional exterminators once a week for a month. It's better to just close the room & not go in there during that time. And when I say, take everything out - just like lice - everything has to be washed. Clothes, bed spreads....all linen. Then take all drawers out of the dresser & move them away from the walls so the whole room can be sprayed. Wear plastic bags over your shoes & take them off before you leave the room. then immediately take a shower. Otherwise you'll spread them all over your house. It IS possible to contain them though. Do not vacuum the room though. They will move from one room to another on the vacuum cleaner. After the room has been sprayed for the month. Then you can vacuum them up & everything will be ok. Again, this is if you actually have them. You will see them. And if you touch one it will explode red. (They are tiny so it's a little red explosion.) That is the blood they probably sucked out of you and filled their bellies with. Gross? Yes. But they are more common then people think. I run a hotel and horrifically faced this last year. Thankfully in only one room but it was terrifying!!! There are entire hotels in NYC that have infestations they can't get rid of. And not bad places! NICE hotels. People come from all over the world. And not all places have the same standards of grooming. Good luck!

Bedbugs bites are usually three or more in a row. However, if they are not disturbed during meal, they might just bite once, and then you will have a big welt, provided that you do react to the bites. You did overreact a bit, but it won’t hurt to protect your bed, this is always the first and the most important step of bedbug control. Take a look at my Blog if you need more information:

Just to confirm, wait till you get any more bites. If you do, tell the building owner to fumigate the place. If they don't do it, move from there without taking any furniture or wall hangings.

From what I heard, they don't bite just once. But if you are that paranoid call the dept of health in your neighborhood.

You are overeacting a bit! Just strip you bed and hoover the mattress with the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner.Open all the windows (they hate cold weather) or if your in the States and its not dark put it outside for the day.
