She has started telling lots of lies about the smallest things. Is she just testing to see how much she can get away with? For what reason would she do this?

She is not so much testing you right now as if she would be if she was lying at a later age. Children around the age of 6 have a hard time differentiating between fantasy and reality.Theywatch movies and pretend play so much that "making things up" becomes natural...Hence why kids that age so often have imaginary friends and are afraid of monsters...You just need to help her see the difference between real and pretend and know that she isn't necessarily doing this out of spite or malice...This phase will pass...Good luck.

Kids sometimes feel empowered when they get people to believe something that is not true. It can be addicting. You should keep talking to your child about the dangers of lying, that even if it seems little now, people won't believe her about bigger things later. She will get to be known as a liar.
Some ideas:
The next time she asks for candy at the store, ask her if she's lying. Have a conversation then about reputations and lying. Find other situations where a talk about lying may be started.
Have a cup that you put 10 cents in every time she lies. At the end of the week count it out with her and take that much out of her allowance. You could also use a tally sheet instead.
Show her movies and read stories about lying that teach the consequences of lying.

Remember in all this that you have to be a good example yourself or nothing you do will work.

My 6 year old boy was doing the same thing all the time. You could catch him red-handed and he'd still lie. I sat down with him and told him how serious lying is and how people won't trust you or listen to you when they know you lie a lot. He has become a very honest boy now!

I would call her out on every lie no matter what. Please don't let it slide my two step kids are the biggest liars I have ever met and its because when they lie their parents ignore it (even when they know its a lie). Little lies are common at that age but if not handled they will turn into bigger more malicious lies. Trust me!
