Only recently have i found myself with mild to severe neck pain. I expect the pain is as a result of sleeping awkwardly. Movement of the neck is restricted so that when i look to the left, i feel a searing pain stemming from the area behind my left shoulder. Im not sure if its something that will improve with rest or deteriorate without intervention?

You're probably sleeping in an awkward position. Try not to drink booze before you sleep which is what usually causes it.

If you believe this to be a result of sleeping awkwardly, then it may be muscular. Take an OTC analgesic for pain and try a heating pad and/or muscle rub to help relax the muscle and soothe the pain. Try gentle stretching but don't overdo it. If movement doesn't improve and pain hasn't been reduced in 3 days, see your doctor about this. The problem may not be muscular. Did you really mean "deteriorate without intervention" or "resolve without intervention"?

You may simply have a 'stiff neck' or a 'simple sprain' but if you feel a 'searing pain' when you try turning your head to the left, you should see a doctor 'just in case' it is something that will 'deteriorate without intervention.' DOCTORS are there to 'take care of EVERYTHING' and not just 'clean up after' someone who 'doesn't care' about his/her body.

Check with a dentist to find out if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw during sleeping. In my teens I used to suffer frequently with stiff necks (about once a week). The pain would sometimes be so severe I would end up in A&E. Anyway I later found out my stiff necks were not a result of sleeping awkwardly as I had presumed and as I was told. They were in fact a result of grinding my teeth during sleep. if it is you can get a mouth guard that helps to prevent you from grinding your teeth and thus no-more stiff necks!

The type of massage that will be most effective will be Shiatsu, and because you can do it yourself, anywhere, it makes it most affordable! I would also suggest getting a special pillow to help with the sleeping position - to try to avoid the circumstance altogether if that is what you think is causing it.

Regardless of the cause; however, you can read about this technique for neck/shoudlers at:

and watch an introduction to Shiatsu at:

Once you learn the techniques, you can do it on yourself anytime for almost instant relief from the pain.

I'm sure you will find success,
Best wishes.

i have this problem!

YOU MUST KEEP THE NECK MOBILE, sat up straight keep rotating your head to the left and the right up and down, and make sure your shoulders are back, and prob best to take anti inflamatries until pain subsides. keep an eye on your posture

i would try getting a neck support pillow. if that still doesnt makes things a little easier, i would go and see a doctor. they will be able to recommend some simple and easy exercises to stimulate the muscle.
hope it gets better soon!

Get someone to massage it, try a little heat rub, it will help the pain, then use a lavender heat pad on it, this will ease it. xxx

At last, you're a pain in your own neck.
