Traditions are great but like some people have said it gets hard when you have more than one. At our birthday parties everyone in attendance gets to sign the table cloth(usually paper and easy to fold up and put away) and we keep them in boxes for each year with all the pictures of the party. My step sister does something similiar. She gets everyone a piece of paper when they walk in the door. Everyone writes down what they want to remember about her/him or the b-day party whatever they like and they put it in a locked box. When he/she turns 18 they get their box and get to read all the lovely things people have said about them and their birthday parties.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!!

Advice I've heard from my mom: Never start traditions! She says this because there ended up being so many traditions she started with me (the oldest) that were hard to keep up once she had 2, then 3 kids. She says the traditions that work for you will evolve naturally as your family grows.
If you do want a birthday tradition, I suggest you keep it small and/or simple and timeless. Perhaps a standard-sized scrapbook page (or more than one, if you need more room) with room left in the center for a picture of blowing out the candles, and everyone writes a message on the page during the party. Then, you have a book that grows with the child. Or, you could make it one book for the family, with a page for every major holiday.
Good luck!

Some kind of savings account - then he could have a great 18th birthday! I think boys prefer money.
Or a gift to charity each year. Or put his name on the list for Packer tickets, by his 18th birthday he might be 50,000 in line.

with the idea that you have with the notes, we did that with my son and put it in a little box so when he gets older he gets to read all the special things his family and friends had to say about him/for him.

For my nieces and nephews birthday we buy a small saparate cake for them to smash into it how they want to. We videotape it and take pictures. It takes a little coaxing but the finished product is wonderful especially if they put there feet in it or smear it on there faces, and try to feed other people cake off of there foot.
