A warning always appears at the bottom of the screen on BBC3's Dog Borstal when they use this training device. Is it because it can scare the dog?

ok, when you train a dog, you dont want to scare them, u want to use the sound associate it with a action you want him to do, when using sound( i perfer a clicker for sound), you need to also associate it with a word, then give them a small treat (small enough for just one bite) after the task is performed. I have trained may dogs and showed people how to train.

the only reason you want to scare a dog is to stop bad habits, and a spary water bottle is the best solution.

well the best way to train the dog is by positive training which is action and reward. the bottle may scare him too much and then he might be afraid of the bottle or even YOU. a scared dog could also become aggressive.

I dont know but it is a stupid method anyway. A squirt bottle is more effective as you can control which dog it is affecting.

PS besides it is counterintuitive to good training and socialization... because it teaches the dog to fear loud sounds.

Some dogs react aggressively out of fear. This device provokes fear.
