If you had an early evening wedding, say 7pm, you could get away with serving cake and punch and munchies instead of a full meal. Same goes for an early wedding. If you were married at 2pm, you could have a cake and punch reception also. With any wedding, you could serve appetizer type foods and finger sandwiches that you could make yourself. Good luck!!

The best time of day to get married and save money on catering is to have a 1 or 2 p.m. wedding. People come to the wedding with no expectations of a meal, so they won't come hungry and gorge themselves. They will expect a light snack; think "high tea" with little sandwiches, cookies. Having finger food at an off-meal time will help you save.
If you want a meal, a sit down dinner is usually cheapest. With a sit-down dinner, people can't go back for seconds so it is a standard per person fee.
And finally, get married on a Sunday. Many venue and caterers offer huge price cuts for Sunday weddings.

Probably lunch time. On a weekday (for maximum savings). Obviously, that's not very practical, sooo....There are lots of ways to save $$ on catering, have a budget set that you can spend solely on the food (excluding wedding cake unless they're including that as well--some do, some don't), and your estimated guest count. Give that figure to your caterer, and then between the 2 of you, come up with menu ideas. Remember that a full, sit down, plated dinner with beef tenderloin and lobster is going to cost significantly more than a buffet dinner with chicken and beef, and that will cost more than heavy hor'duerves, or even just cake and punch. Hope this helps you.

We got married in the evening. It made a really nice atmosphere, and then we did a dessert reception. We served different kinds of dessert, and fruit as well (and some various snack foods so people who were hungry could have something more). We got many comments about how much people loved it and it was quite a bit less expensive than doing a full on meal/dinner

Morning, by far, is the least expensive time to get married. Have a 10:30am ceremony and a light lunch reception. It can be so fun, more casual, and you'll have the whole evening with your new hubby.

Lunch time gives you so many more cheap possibilities on food... theres so many more things you can have. We got married on a Saturday at 1.. we had chicken salad, tuna salad, meat trays, potato salads, chips, cookies, and things to go with the sandwhiches, and of course the cake, and it went wonderful.

A sunday evening wedding is the cheapest. Or you can look into holidays like Memorial Day....Those are pretty cheap too.
