An alter call is when the pastor basically asks anyone if they want to be saved and accept Jesus

Doug, I gotta tell you, the only mass I've seen was during christmas and that was when I was skiing in austria. I looked through the window and thought "that's enough". I've been in plenty of churches all over the world but always just looking at the building, the construction, the thing itself.
Also, I don't believe an 'altar call' in Europe is common but I could be dead wrong.

Actually, altar calls are for a lot of things, not just salvation (rededicating, repentance, etc.).
I haven't seen one in years. probably because statistically, they do not work. I believe that one survey done specifically on converts who responded to alter calls at Billy Graham's crusades found out that 80-90 percent of those who came forward were no longer attending church 1 year later. This doesn't mean that Billy Graham is doing anything wrong, just that altar calls are are not a good way to get people to sincerely dedicate their life to Jesus.

If one does not believe in Christ , why would one participate in an Alter call? That would be absurd and disrespectful to those that actually would want to be saved by Christ and a waste of time to those that do not believe in Christ.

I was about nine or ten. And my aunt shoved me forward all the way to the altar and forcibly made me say aloud that I accepted Jesus. Just another tiny bit of the whole story as to why I gave up on Christianity long ago.

There is only one altar. That is your heart and the church, the temple is your body. It is not a physical palce where everyone gathers.
So all you need to do is get down on your knees and pray to GOD. And, you can do this at home at work and in school for this is what GOD wants and how to worship properly.
And, confess your sins to HIM and HIM alone. A priest has no power or authority to reocncile your repentence for the priest is human and humans are born to sin even priests.

Our congregation dose not have an "Alter call"....... when I was 12 I "went forward" in my grandparents church just ot keep them happy... but it was not untill 40 yrs latter that I actualy came to God... and it was just God and me.. no one else involved... The church I was led to after that day dose not use that practice.

I go to church once a year, on the Sunday closest to my mother's birthday because she always asks me to. So, last September.
