If your boyfriend or girlfriend gets drunk, (and you are sober), and they start belting out "I love yous" and "You're so beautifuls".....are they telling the truth (and the alcohol is just enhancing their true personality) or is it just the alcohol talking?

Wow...so many mixed answers. The phrase "truth serum" that one of you used, was a good example of what I mean. I can't tell if the alcohol is making him say all the things he can't get out while he's sober....or if its just the alcohol that's talking.

I didn't mean for it to come off as my bf being a drunk. This is the first time I'd seen him like that. I was just curious because I'm not a drinker and I don't do the "bar scene"......so I wasn't sure what the alcohol did to him.

It is the alcohol talking. When you drink, you become more and more emotionally impaired. The direction of your emotions compliment the people you are around at the time. It also relaxes people to the point of where they have the courage to do things they normally wouldn't do (for better or worse). Since their emoitons are taking over most of their actions, they think that they are truely expressing thier inner feelings, just because they have never felt that stongly about EVERYTHING they say. The only thing alcohol is enhancing is their emotions good, bad, and everywhere between. If you want to know if he thinks you are beautiful, the next time he drinks make sure it is enough to make him sorry the next day. When he is at the peak of his head-pounding hang-over, ask him what he likes the most about you. If you get anything besides "everything", as in an explained answer, you will know that he real loves you; because it's killing him to have to answer a question that requires true thought. And if he does, you are important enough for him to deal with the pain, just to let you know he cares.

I don't know about enhancing your personality, but in some cases it does loosen a persons tongue to say things that they're normally afraid to say. In other cases it makes them see things in a different light that they won't with when they're sober. You've heard that the girls all get prettier at closing time? That's because those guys vision is blurred to where anything looks good. So sometimes the drunk is deceived by the alcohol and sometimes, they're made braver. Probably depends on the amount consumed.

I think a drunken state allows for some people to open up more and be honest. They have lost their inhibitions and feel they can say what is truly on their minds. This is not always a good thing though....it can backfire drastically.

I have known some of the most wonderful people who've been under the influence and they just become even more wonderful (if that's possible) but then, I have known other nice people who have become over-bearing, spiteful and downright hurtful.

Are they just telling their version of the truth? I guess so. People who blame alcohol for their actions are just using it for a lame excuse and not taking responsibility for what they've said or done.

I've been to many parties and other with alcohol. It is something that makes you feel good and happy. When you are drinking let just say you tell everone and any one what you feel. I don't think it makes you want to lie it brings the things out of you, you don't as alot. I they say it maybe it should of been said. But if you question them in the morning and they don't remember it, it probobly not true. If they say they ment it with a sincere look and they ask no questions it so true. I love you is usually not lied about in less someone waits something. So think about the person who said it and if they have shown you any signs that the belting is for real.

There IS the Latin saying " In vino veritas"-in wine,is truth. But that generally refers to maybe a glass or two. Think about the lush guy at the bar, hang on his buddies telling them he loves them, they;re his best friend, etc. That's mostly the alcohol. If what you are referring to is coming out after a reasonable amount of alcohol, then I would say yes there is truth to what people say then, and the alcohol has loosened their inhibitions and social stigmas. I know for myself, when I have had a few I think I can dance, but there is NO truth to that whatsoever.

Will since you not drinking and they acting like a loud mouth.I wouldn't believe anything a drunk say or does. I guess you were embarrassed .Well if this happens often
a red flag should go up .Don't ever get into a car with him or anyone else that has been drinking. Most drunks
think there made of steel, macho, outspoken, and do things they wouldn't do sober. They do say thinks that hurt you then say i was drunk. Also some get real mean.
Be Safe

I tended bar for over 15 years and was married to a drunk for 13 years. I see alot from those 2 experiences. Most people who drink to the point of being drunk say things they don't even realize they are saying, very seldom do they remember saying these things. So I wouldn't really take anything they say seriously. If your friend is drinking alot everyday or so, it might be time to consider getting a new friend. Drinking in relationships is rarely any good to come of it.

Most likely it's the booze talking. It depends on HOW drunk they are. You never know. It could be them talking and the alcohol has acted as a "truth serum", thus enhancing their true personality, as you say.

It's how we found out Mel Gibson was an antisemitic.

Alcohol is a depressant. It affects our brain and depresses systems in the brain which control how we normally behave and act - so we start to act in ways we wouldn't normally behave if we hadn't been drinking.
We normally are inhibited to a certain degree with it comes to some things and wouldn't behave in certain ways without the alcohol - if ya boyfriend or girlfriend only says those things to ya when they are drunk ya might want to talk to them when they are sober and see what they say then.

Hmm...welll alcohol is a truth syrum, but no it doesn't enhance a personality. I can say things and not mean them just like the next person. Alcohol keeps your inhibitions down so you could wind up saying/doing things you normally don't do~
