Not a true statement. More households have cats than dogs.
Unfortunately people don't get their cats fixed and that is why there are so many.

In the US cats are more popular pets than dogs. According to the Humane Society it's 73 million dogs vs. 90 million cats, so more people own cats. Not sure about other countries.

Well I love them both!! Currently I have cats. As for the excess cat population I think thats just because people are incredibly irresponsible, careless and stupid. They don't think it through when they get an animal. They just think "oh it's cute and furry, I'll take it!" Then when it starts to scratch things (shocking since it's got CLAWS) they just dump the animal anywhere or on anyone. They don't view it as a living thing they view it as a novelty. My sister worked at an animal shelter for a few years and saw tons of animals (both dogs and cats) surrendered for the most retarded reasons. Things like "I started seeing a guy who doesn't like cats" or "I got a new living room set and the dog doesn't match". Seriously. Humans suck! lol

I have owned cats my whole life and I love them but Dogs in general are more loving and attentive without wanting something. However I do have a cat that behaves just like a dog, he follows me anywhere I go and is never more than 5 feet away from me. He can be sleeping on the couch and all I have to do is call him and tell him "It's bed time" and he follows me to my room and snuggles with me.

cats have (for possibly the 1st time) become more popular than dogs since busy lifestyles are unconducive (sp?) to keeping dogs. while cats benefit from this (always a good thing in my eyes) i do pity the dog population. they are fine & worthy beasts who do absolutely not deserve our scorn. how many millenia have they served us well & faithfully? as far as preference, this is sbjective since some will always prefer dogs while the rest of us will always favour cats. apart from the vermin of our species who do not like animals in any shape or form. woe, misery & death upon them!

I don't believe they do. Many census on this question indicate there are more pet cats than dogs in the U.S. Therefore I would assume more people like cats than dogs.

I heard this once and have used it to answer this question many times, I wish I knew who to credit this to.

Imagine you owned a dog, and you woke up two inches tall one day. That dog would smell you and recognize you immediately, he/she would then protect you as much as possible.

Now, imagine the same scenario with a cat. The cat would play with you for a few minutes and then it would eat you.

This is why people enjoy dogs more.

i think it is because as a human trait we want to be needed and dogs need us as our pets. they need us to take care of them and make them happy. but cats are more depended and they can live out in the world with out us.
