Can we say TACKY? Because that is what it is T-A-C-K-Y! A person never, never, ever throws themself a party and registers for gifts, never, ever, ever.

A house warming party is thrown by someone else, and then there should not be any registering for gifts. IF, if, someone wants to bring something, they can, but it should never be suggested.

If they want to throw their own party, then it is called an OpenHouse. This is an opportunity for the friends, family and neighbors to come see the new place, and share in the joy with the new home owners. Again, there should not be any registering for gifts. The homeowners should be prepared to feed and entertain at an open house. Gifts may be given, but never suggested.

That is very tacky, a housewarming party is not a cash grab, or gift grab it is supposed to show of you new home and formally invite your friends and family to share it with you.

Some people bring gifts, but it should be an option not an expectation. A bottle of wine and small houseplant are perfectly acceptable gifts, it is just rude to expect a small appliance or furnishings.

Ugh. That is tacky...a housewarming should be a time to get togetehr with your friends and celebrate, not collect pasta pots and blenders. If people want to bring a gift (and etiquette rules say they should!), that is up to them...registering for gifts basically says that you expect people to bring something, and you're expecting others to outfit your new house. Tacky!

It's pretty tacky - you're not supposed to assume that people will buy you gifts.

that is not acceptable--baby or wedding showers only. it is customary to bring a housewarming gift, but that decision is made by the guest.
