We rely very heavily on idioms, just ridiculously so, and they vary from place to place and dialect to dialect.

Spelling isn't as complicated as it looks, but the patterns can be hard to recognize. Also if your native language isn't Germanic or Romance, you won't have the frames of reference to take advantage of many of those patterns.

It's all relative. If English is compared to languages like German, Dutch or Mandarin and all its variants, then you will know that English is one of the easier languanges, in terms of grammar, lexicon, etc. It also depends on the linguistic distance between English and your native language. People pick up English relatively quickly, compared to Chinese, Japanese or German.

for one thing, i think we're the only language that has contractions, like "don't" and "we're" and "I'm". For another, we have so many words that are spelled the same and are pronounced differently, like, "read" and "read" Both spelled the same, but can be pronounced differently. We also have many words that sound the same but are spelled differently. "See" and "sea". English is always changing and we're coming up with new words constantly. It can be very difficult to learn. Good luck!
