Our very old dog will need to be put to sleep soon and it is killing me thinking of taking him to the vet. Is there med out there that will put him to sleep peacefully, that I could administer myself ? I hate even thinking of this and the pain of losing him gets to be very strong at times.

All those years of fun and love have to come to this, everytime we have pets.... makes me want to simply not have any more for this is very painful.

First, I'm very sorry that you're going through this. I have 3 pets, and dread the day I have to make those kinds of decisions. I work with dogs and volunteer for a rescue group. My advice is to take the dog to the vet and let them take care of it. Putting the dog to sleep is not expensive, and the vet's supervision is critical, because they make sure the heart is absolutely not still beating. You can not be sure anything you give him will not cause him stress or pain. It's also illegal to do it, no matter how good your intentions. Some vets will make housecalls for that. Please talk to your vet and find the best solution for your pet.

I know only too well how painful this is for you, I've been there too. You wouldn't want to do it yourself, knowing that you would be causing him pain by the drugs you would have to administer. And it would be a slow suffering death.

Much kinder to have the vet come to your house. He will just drift off to sleep, with no pain and knowing that you are there with him. It's the last loving thing you can do for him, and the last thing he will know is your love for him.

All my Danes have been put to sleep at home. There is no question of trying to move a 180 lb dog, who is unable to stand. It's like having a horse go down. I held them in my arms and talked to them while the vet administered the drugs, which is an overdose, basically. They slowly closed their eyes and knew they were loved completely, as they drifted away.

I want to first of all say I am sorry that you are going to have to put your dog down. I know it is difficult. As for home options you would need to call a vet to put them to sleep. (unless like some people you just shoot your pet, which I dont recommend). Euthansia is a type of anesthesia and so only licensed vets can get it. What they do is overdose the animal with anesthesia so it goes to sleep like it would for surgery and then it finally stops the heart. I have a feeling that when the time comes to do it you will be too emotional to do it yourself. Most people have a hard enough time signing their name to the release form to euthanize their pet let alone do it themselves. No one wants to be the person that kills their pet, there is too much guilt that goes with it. Most vets will come out to euthanize an animal, so that is what I would recommend doing. I hope this helps some. I am sorry about the decision you are faced with. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know it is difficult.

If it would be easier for you to have your dog be put to sleep at your home, call your veterinarian and see whether they can put him to sleep in your home, or whether they can recommend a vet that could come to your home to put your dog to sleep. This is not that uncommon a request and your vet should be able to help you or recommend a vet that will come to your home.

You should not even consider doing this yourself - aside from the fact that most of these medications are only available to licensed vets, you probably don't have the knowledge or ability to administer the drugs properly.

In most cities there are vets that come to your home. Look on the web or in the phone book for a vet that would be able to come to your house in order to put your dog asleep in the privacy of your own home.

The kindest thing is to go to the vet. You'll be allowed to hold and soothe him while he goes to sleep, and they can take care of the remains for you,or you can make arrangements. If he is unable to walk well,is incontinent,in pain,or just plain not enjoying life anymore because of inability to run and play, then it is time for you to let him go. I wish you the best for your guy, take care.
