Karl, think if it like asking... "what's the best automobile on the market at this moment."
While the answer might be a BMW 750Li or something like that, you might want to tell us a little more about your needs.
You might like something like a Canon G7. Or, perhaps a mid range DSLR, like a Nikon D80. For compact cameras, it I had to buy one today, I'd go for the Fuji F31fd.

This one is pretty good with 8.0 Mega pixels and 12x optical zoom I would think you'd be hard pushed to find a better one....

The Hasselblad H3D 39megapixel. A lazy US30 000 should get you the body and the back, then you buy some lenses.
