What is the rule of thumb? For example, I know I would say, You are invited...that's understood, but what about other sentences? Is there a rule I can follow whithout second guessing myself?

when speaking in plural use "are" (they are, we are)
when using single use "is" (he is, she is)

singular and plural in that order. is and are.
