Sympathy Pains: Dads Getting A Taste Of Maternity:

More often than not you will see the expectant father sporting a “bump” just like mom-to-be. Why shouldn’t he, you say, after all, he was there when it all happened. Well, according to recent research, dads may actually experience some sympathy symptoms during pregnancy as well. So, ladies, contrary to what you believe you are NOT in this alone.

Numerous studies show that those who care for laboring women, generally the spouse or partner also undergo a similar series or experiences, pains and discomforts. In fact, in some cultures, an equal amount of attention, if not more, is placed on the expectant father. Professionals even note, that frequently father’s to be exhibit almost identical pains, anxieties, facial expressions, and often, even push, during second stage labor (if present). Some dads even struggle with other common “complaints”, including: nausea, constipation and hemorrhoids.

Additionally, in-depth investigations implicate that soon to be dads experience hormonal changes (of their own) with the anticipation of the impending birth. Tests show that men’s testosterone levels are significantly lowered during the last few weeks prior to their child’s arrival, and increased considerably after birth. The same studies also revealed that estrogen was also notably higher in expectant fathers.

Researches seem to feel that these changes may be caused not only due to “empathy” and the (natural) human condition known as couvades (sympathy pains), but also due to a man’s adaptive response to an ebb in the desire and need for sexual intimacy and relationship that accompanies this critical time frame just prior to birth; as well as the reduction in the “fight or flight” response.

Still, researches say that these “preliminary” findings DO indicate some physiological basis for this empathetic response, it is NOT totally conclusive of general fathering behavior and that there is no “normal level” of hormonal change logged.

yes i think they can. he may just have the flu though. lol my huband seems to feel some of what i am feeling sometimes. he has eaten candy lately and he does not ever eat that. he had a back ache and he has been really tired lately. i think when you are really close to someone they catch things from you. like if you live with a couple women soon enough all your periods will come at the same time of the month. good luck.

Some people believe they can have sympathetic symptoms. I think its psychologically based if they do. Some women do not get any of the morning sickness, etc while pregnant.
