Is there such a thing or is it just the preserve of Hollywood? All I can find is film references... but if you know otherwise I would love to be enlightened.

Well there have been reported cases of demonic possession throughout history and around the world. In recent times I think the movie "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is based on a "real" case of supposed demonic posession.

Demonic or spirit possessions are also much more common in other parts of the world. In the Phillipines, for example, there are exorcists who are very popular and in demand. And since most of the country is Catholic, these exorcist are usually called upon to expel the "minions of Satan."

The Afro-Carribbean religions like Santeria, Voodoo, Macumba, etc, also commonly practice spirit possession, although for them it's not a "demon" who possesses them against their will but their patron spirit who takes over their body is a sort of communion between spirit and man.

As to whether any of these cases are "real," well, science can explain a lot of what happens during a possession but not everything. I think that's something you have to decide upon individually.

I didn't believe in demons existence until I read Mahesh Chavda's autobiography "Only Love makes a miracle".

There are books you can read about demons and how to get them out of peoples' lives, e.g Neil Anderson "Bondage breaker".
Demons are normally pretty good at hiding themselves, so it might just look as if a person suffers from uncontrollable anger etc. Since they are invisible most people (in the West) don't think they exist.

Normally deliverance ministries and books prefer to talk about demonization or being oppressed/afflicted by demons.
This because 'demon possession' is how the King James version of the bible refers to demonic affliction; however that was not properly translated, the greek is 'demonized' I think, but you'd have to check that with a New Testament scholar, or look it up yourself with online tools that let you see the Greek and word meanings.

I see demon possession as the infection of certain personality structures that have been constructed unnaturally. I treat them as real entities because they develop wants and goals and try to override the personality. Research Carl Jung's archetypes. While these are seen by many as different, they give you an idea what's happening anyways.

Demonic possession happens when demons enter a person & claim that territory. There are examples of this in the New Testament.

And people today get possessed when they reject God and get into cult activity that opens them up to demons. There are plenty out there. People possessed will have a demon talk out of them even. Sometimes the person won't even remember what happens when the demons take over. Sometimes someone gets into a drunken black out and do things only satan or demons would do. That person may not remember a thing.

When a person is delivered of possession by confessing Jesus Christ Lords and believing in His Resurrection Power, person is saved and given the Holy Spirit. Person can never be possessed by demons again. Because of the Holy Spirit birth / protection. The person has been delivered from the powers of darkness into Christs marvelous Kingdom & Light.

If a person isn't saved (didn't confess Jesus Christ ones Lord & Savior) and demons had left by excorsism or something, person is still clean but vulnerable for demon return with other demons worse than itself.

Just read the Gospels of Jesus Christ.

A friend was positive that her son was possessed. He'd been a cheery boy but became morose and couldn't get out of bed in the day. He spoke in a rough voice and told her he was with the watchman. She enlisted the help of a cleanser, a lay exorcist.

He found that there was a portal between her loft and staircase and there were many spirits living in her house, not all of them benign. He said it was like a pub for spirits. He managed to rid the house of most of them but one was particularly demonic and it sapped all the cleanser's energy to get him to go. As he gave him a final push, he disappeared through the staircase wall into next door.

The cleanser apologised and said that this might cause trouble and asked who lived there. Our friend told him it was a couple who practiced voodoo. They'd gone by the end of the week. Her son reverted to normal. All true.

many kinds of things in the spiritual nature happen frequently IN OUR WORLD. You probably live in a modernized country where people live dreams, wishing the world was different. Eventually these lies creep into our way of thinking and convince us that what we want to think is true, the mind is very powerful. People are scared of what they themselves cannot explain, and instead of admitting that they can't explain something, they'd rather blame the inadequacy on something else. Demons can posess people and houses can be haunted. Look hard enough for the truth on any matter and you will find it.

The exorcism of Emily Rose was apparently based on true events, don't believe in it myself though, I think any form of demonic possession is really down to mental instability.

Read 'An exocist tells his tale' by Father Gabrielle Amorth. All information in there. He is or was the chief exorcist in Rome. Demonic possession rare.

It does make for entertaining movies, but in the real world it is easily curable through therapy.

Or we could go back to drilling holes in their heads to let the evil spirits out.....

Have you ever noticed that atheists never get possessed?
