I have a son who is in the 1st grade. He doesn't write his letters the way he was taught, but he does have a nice handwriting. Should I try to correct him or let him continue the way he is?

My son is 7 and doesnt write the way he was taught either. That is fine. Everyone comes up with their own way of writing eventually. I dont write how I was taught either, but I have nice handwriting. So does my son. So unless his teacher complains about it, I wouldnt worry about it.

As long as his handwriting is legible I wouldn't worry too much about the 'correct' way to write.

As a child I moved school several times and each time I changed school I was told that I had to change my writing to fit in with the school I was at - this resulted in my writing getting continually worse.

So, unless his school has a problem with your son's writing I would recommend that you let him write the way he feels comfortable.

I have to ask the obvious: Is he left-handed? Few teachers know how to teach lefties how to write in right-handed world.

I agree with the answer above, if he has nice, legible handwriting, by all means let him write that way. Do not do anything to discourage from him. God knows, we have enough mindless robot clones in the world already.

If you correct him you're likely to end up with a kid who doesn't like to write at all. Definitely praise him when he writes neatly, even if it's not the way he was taught. If it is important to you that he do it the way the school teaches, be particularly enthusiastic when he writes more the way they want him to.

But never criticize his writing. You want him to enjoy writing. It will be a valuable skill throughout his life.

Neither of my children writes the way they were taught in school, but it has never hampered their academic development.

Ask the teacher what he's doing wrong. Maybe she can send some papers home for him to practice. If you just let him do it 'his way' then he could get bad marks on his report card. You need to do all that you can to ensure that he gets the best grades he can.

He needs to meet the expectations at school and write them the way that they want him to. Check with his school before making corrections and get the feedback from his teacher.
