Micro brews with a head - of course that is all I drink.

I have brewed many ales in the past and have bartended as well. Working beer festivals you learn a few things about serving good beer.

Good beer needs to breath, like a good wine. The head allows the beer to breath. It creates an aroma which adds to the experience of enjoying the beer. It no longer is just about taste, but smell now adds to the experience.

A proper beer glass is formed for this reason, narrower at the bottom and wider at the top. This allows a larger surface for the beer, which gives it breathing room. Pilsner glasses and pint glasses were developed for this.

Don't suffocate your beers, let them breath, we all need a good head to breath.

I prefer my beer WITH head foam. Actually it should always have a foam. This foam prevents/delays the beer from getting into contact with air, which spoils beer in a short time. So you have the same fresh taste until the end of your glass.

As a bartender I've been taught to pour a healthy topping head on a beer as it helps release the unwanted carbon in a beer which helps prevent gas after drinking (the burps).

As for the answer above about pouring a Guinness without head.... that guy must of worked long and hard at it as it has a tendency to form its own head after pouring! lol Kudos to that guy... he was probably doing the job someone had previously told him

With head foam suds. I always wonder when I am served a pint with hardly any foam, that the keg is nearly empty, meaning it's not so fresh.

Cheers,

Most beers are served with minimal head, and bartenders pour them that way. Guinness Stout, however, must be served with a head. I got a chuckle in Poland when a very well-meaning bar tender very carefully poured me a Guinness Stout without a head. He had worked so hard to keep the head from forming that I could hardly correct him ;)

Without. I hate having to find my beer through the foam. It's just drinking or inhaling air.

Wiiiiiiiiith foam...oh heck, what would I give for a good Guinness right now, instead I gotta cope with a German Beer...urrrgh.....but at least it has some foam.
So, cheers everyone and have a nice night/day whatever...but make sure you enjoy it.

I prefer Guinness, so the foam is a required element. Not too fond of very hoppy beers, overly carbonated stuff.

If it is a stout beer then I like it with the head.(Guinness for instance). if it is just a basic light colored Brew then I prefer no head.

without, the trick is in learning how to pour it. building a big head makes it loose some flavor
