Go with the colour, you could buy a really beautiful red glass vase, or a pair of goblets. A red leather bound photo album, for their anniversary photos?

The coolest thing I did for my parents silver anniversary was a gift box, I chose purple as another colour to go with it- you might like to choose silver or gold, and I bought small gifts along these colour themes- coffee, chocolate, special biscuits or jams, candles, bubble bath, anything you like.
Be careful to keep track of your spending as it can easily go over budget as it's just so fun to choose. Cover a shoe box in paper as an inexpensive gift box or choose a basket or other pretty storage 'solution' that they can use as well!

Friends sent us a beautiful picture frame we love. It is frameless and held together with a red heart at the top-center. The heart has "40" in silver. Inscribed on the front of the silver base is "looking back with joy" and on the reverse is "looking forward with love." We have our anniversary photo in it. It is made by the Hallmark card company.

That's not a lot of money for an anniversary present, but check the antique stores. They usually have out of the ordinary stuff.

I have seen some beautiful jewelry sets with Ruby gemstones! Probably my favorite is a necklace/earring set I have seen with ruby flower petals and emeralds to make the leaves. Something similar to that would be a great present...ruby and flowers!

We bought our parents a traditional anniversary clock for their 40th. An anniversay clock is a glass dome with a rotaing spinner at the bottom of the clock mechanism. My mom and dad loved it.

Toy sailing yacht named RUBY as you obviously can't afford the real thing.
