stick with XP. Vista is unproven. Plus not all vendors are compliant with it yet. Trust me

As MS Vista is a new operating system, I would advise holding off upgrading for these reasons:
- Vista has a lot of new code. The chances of the code having flaws is pretty high right now so you might want to wait until security experts and the IT community can pick it apart a bit. MS will release patches (I think I saw that SP 1 is expected late 2007) so you could wait until things settle a bit on the update site.
- Many software vendors haven't certified common applications on MS Vista yet. NOTE: This isn't a MS problem but it certainly would affect you as a consumer. Check to see if the applications you intend to run are capable of running on MS Vista.
- I've heard that the upgrade to MS Vista apparently invalidates the activation of MS Windows XP so that you can't reinstall or transfer the older release. As I indicated, I've only seen that listed on a forum I watch. I don't have a good source for it but it seems possible, especially as MS is cracking down on pirated copies of the OS.

Reasons to upgrade:
- After using a computer for a while, you start to customize it (setup the look and feel, store documents/photos/music/bookmarks/etc..., application configurations, etc...). Migrating early rather than later can sometimes be desirable to avoid having to "customize" again. NOTE: Migration tools may exist. I haven't seen them in Vista to know how effective they are.
- You already have the entitlement to upgrade. If you expect to upgrade, might as well do it while the software is free.

Several opinions exist online that discuss upgrading or staying with MS Windows XP. The general consensus is to wait unless you have a strong need (i.e. a vendor's application you use is only available on MS Windows Vista) to use the latest version.

I wouldn't bother installing Windows Vista. It consumes a ton of system resources.

Recommended System Requirements for Vista:
1 GHz (1000 MHz) processor
1 GB (1024 MB) RAM
128 MB video memory
40 GB HDD / at least 15 GB free
DVD-ROM

Recommended System Requirements for XP:
300 MHz processor
128 MB RAM
1.5 GB HDD
Standard SVGA video adapter
CD-ROM

Those results were taken directly from the Microsoft website.

As you can see, Vista eats up a lot more computer resources than XP. Unless you really have a good reason, I would strongly recommend against upgrading to Vista. It's a waste of money, and a big waste of space.

You cannot get the upgrade for free. Windows Vista is the best Operating System ever released

I have the same option with my new computer.

My decision was to go ahead and order it, but I have no plans to install it for quite some time. I think the dust needs to settle a bit on Vista. Microsoft is already getting ready to release a Service Pack for it and it's only been out for a week. That's kind of indicative of the potential headaches with it. An additional consideration is the incompatibility of any hardware or preipherals you may have such a older printers, scanners, etc. There are many software issues also. It's going to take some time for all those companies to release new drivers, etc. so their software and hardware will work with Vista.

JMHO.

There are only a few reasons to upgrade...Compatablilty: Some programs are probably going to be Vista exclusive. Direct X 10: Increased gaming preformance (but you need a DX10 card). Small addons: Searching the start menu, nice visual theme, better security, etc...
Of course there are down sides such as: DRM, activaton, phoning home, compatability, and well its still Windows.

Personally I wouldn't yet. Maybe if it becomes more impressive. But is there really any reason for YOU to upgrade? Will there be any benefit to YOU? Only you can answer that....

I recommend that you wait for 1 0 2 months before installing Window Vista since they always leave improved versions the next months

get the upgrade... even if you don't install it right away you only have a limitted time to order it. get it so that if a year from now you find a program which doesn't run on anything but vista, you'll have the option to upgrade to vista without paying for it a 2nd time.

Upgrades are always worth it but if you're happy with Pro then stay with it. Vista has been developed for the travelling entreprenuer more than the casual or everyday user. Of course free is free and if you decide to switch later it'll cost you. If you're doing it by download then download it to a folder for later installation when you're better prepared to go ahead with it.

your new computer should be powerful enough to support the upgrade, i don't know what's new in vista but i'm sure it's better and it's brand new.
