I have a V6 Mustang. I'm thinking about putting 17 inch rims on it. Does this go by size of RIM only, or do certain rims not fit on some cars?

I'm aware I'll have to change the tires too, obviously. I just cringe at the ($) thought of it!

If you're worried about the cost, don't do it.

Yes, there's more to it than diameter. There's also how wide they are, how far in or out they are offset from the hub, how many lug holes they have, and in what pattern.

Check http://www.tirerack.com, it can tell you what size wheels will fit your car.

NO, you can't put any size wheel on your car. Not only does the pattern for the lugs determine wheels size, but the body of the car must be able to accommodate a larger wheel. Check on-line with various wheel distributors. They usually have a place where you enter the make and model of your car. These sites will then show you which wheels will fit your car without you having to make any major changes to the vehicle. Keep in mind, you may have to upgrade your shocks and/or struts. It's best to talk with a shop who specializes in replacement wheels in order to get an idea of what you are looking at in terms of dollars and modifications, if any.

most rims can fit any car. but depending on the width of the rim you might have to get some extra body work done to carve out the wheel well so you can turn the wheel all the way.

check out www.tirerack.com and see the rims you want fit the profile of what they have. and from there you should get an idea whether or not itll cost you more.

Should fit with a skinnier tire. Haven't seen the fender gaps on a protege 5 in a while however.
