gambling is an addiction, one thats as difficult to quit as alcoholism or heroin, and can be just as expensive...

the first step is getting him to admit he's addicted and has a habit... most people don't view gambling this way, and its hard to get the point across, but you've got to try... its hard to break it to him... be gentle... sit down with him and explain how you feel... next explain that you want to show him that he's addicted, tell him that you want him to be open with you, and you're going to start writing down when he goes and how much he spends so you can show him on a regular basis... he's not going to suddenly stop, but the more he sees how often he goes and how much he spends, the more he'll start to realise himself... the point of this is to get him to help himself... you've also got to refuse to go to the bookies with him and keep as far out of it as possible..

in the meantime there's lots of agencies and organisations you can contact which will provide much better information than i can... get as much advice as you can... there should also be some sort of gambling anonymous locally where you can meet up with people who're going through the same thing as you...

once you're able to show him how much he spends and how often he goes, it should hopefully come as a bit of a shock... and hopefully then you'll be able to talk to him properly...

part of the addiction is the habit, its social, and its something which is comfortable... to help him stop, you've got to try to get something which will fill the void left by the bookies... ie. you've got to help him get gainful employment... at this point its worth finding out if he's got any old mates who can help you out and talk to him about what he's doing.. often things coming from a friend can be more awakening... also if he has friends who don't gamble, encourage him to see them instead of seeing those that do... to get him to break the habit of gambling, you've got to get him and yourself entirely out of that environment and everything thats associated with it..

whatever you do, don't shout at him or get angry... it won't solve anything at all, it'll just push him away rather than bring him towards you... its really hard when you see somebody you love hurting themselves, but you've got to try your hardest to keep your temper, he needs reassurance and love and you need to be the one that supports him, as he's going to need all the support he can get... good luck...

You both need to go to gamblers anonymous. Gambling is a very serious addiction. My father lost everything he ever worked for in his life gambling. The house, his cars, his boat...etc. Gambling is no different then any other addiction. It includes, lying, cheating and stealing. He might not be at that stage yet...but soon enough he will be. There is no easy way to make money except for going out and earning it. Stay away from the casinos or BINGO halls. They will nickle and dime you and take all your money. And even if you do win...you will never make up enough money that you lost. Or get back the respect from others. Trust me on this.
