I have tried to find the answer to this online. I can't find out if we can go to Fetlas Trading Post or Gander Mountain to purchase a gun or ammo if we reside in IL. Hubby has a FOID card for IL.

You can buy rifles or shotguns, not handguns.

You'd pretty much have to get it transferred through a FFL (who will probably charge you an arm and a leg so that his $600 AKM is more attractive). Your FFL will need to fill out ATF Form 6 (linked below). And then wait some time for it to get approved. It's really a hassle, and it's even possible that the ATF would block the import. The other problem is 18 USC 922(r), also known as "922(r) compliance". Pretty much foreign rifles that are not "sporting" (like an AK) must not contain more than 10 foreign parts. This means that an AK/AKM type rifle needs 5-6 parts replaced with US-made parts. So your friend or licensed manufacturer must make the replacements before you get your hands on the rifle. Which is going to cost you even more $$$. Trying to bring it back over the border yourself would be highly illegal. A felony and jail time is not worth saving $500. A good alternative solution would be to get a Saiga rifle. Inexpensive and classified as "sporting", Saiga rifles are no-hassle rifles that are pretty much AKs in a different form. You should be able to find one for around $450.

Yes, you can purchase any gun you want from out of state , but modern firearms may be be transferred to non residents as a general rule. They will be sent to an FFL dealer in your state, and the transfer will occur in your state. You have to make the arrangement before you buy.

Too my knowledge, you have to be a resident of that state. They do this for safety purposes. But to be sure, I would call a place in Indiana that sells guns and ask about there policy.

You can buy a gun the same day but you have to first go through a mandatory five day waiting period in most states. At least its that way for a handgun in Mo. Ask a policeman. He should know.
