Dogs have anal glands that can become infected and need an anitbiotic for or in worse cases, the antibiotic is injected directly into these glands. My little Pom scooted off and on and that is what it was. Small dogs are more prone to this and you did not say what kind of dog you have.
Best to take dog to vet for determination, rather than self treat a dog and give unneeded medications and still not solve the real problem.

Check the annal glands. Holding the tail up put a finger on each side of the dog's anus about 1 to 1/4 inch to the sides of the hole, (this depends on the size of the dog etc). Depress your fingers in toward the dog, and squeeze together gently, while pulling slightly out. What your trying to do is depress the sides to express what he is having trouble expressing on his own which will come out the butt hole, although it is actually coming from to small openings on either side of his anus which secrete into the opening of the anus. If liquid or sometimes a more solid than liquid substance comes out expect it to smell quite a bit more than what normally comes out. lol If that doesn't work or seems swollen or very painful, just don't try it and see a vet as they could be impacted or infected.

I agree with what the others say... it could be tape worms but it the dog could also need his anal glands expressed. What no one has yet said it that it is very easy to see tape worms. THis is gross but when the dog has a bowel movement look at it closely and see of you see any small white things the size of a piece of rice. They will be moving. THese are segments of the tape worm. You must look at a fresh stool as they die and become brown later. Good luck

Scooting can be a symptom of tape or round worms; however, it can also indicate other symptoms including, but not limited to, anal gland issues, bowel problems or fleas. You should not treat your animal for worms without the advise of a vet.

Hope your puppy feels better soon!

It could be, but it may just be from the irritation of passing all of the worms. It could also be anal glands or just that his butt itches. Sometimes dewormers will cause the poop to be a little soft, so it may be that some of the poop is sticking to its butt and it is just trying to get it off.

It is also a symtom of anal glands need to be extracted. They become full and need to be emptied. They itch when they are full. In the wild they would spray from the anal glands to mark their territory but as domestic animals they don't do that anymore they have evolved, but the glands are still there and fill up and they can't extract themselves, take him to the vet and it will take 3 minutes to extract them and doggie will be in heaven. Butt scooting is NOT usually a sign of worms. It is most usually a sign of anal sac issues.

It might not be worms, this is caused by the anal glands being plugged, worms, allergies. Do the stool specimans have worms? What consistency is the stool? Is the dog licking also? Before treating for worms, you need to be sure the other areas can be eliminated as the cause, treating for worms when they are not there can be dangerous to your pet's health.
