Origin: English

Spelling variations of this family name include: Proud, Proude, Prout, Prowd and others.

First found in Shropshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: William Proud settled in Maryland in 1774; Henry Proud arrived in Philadelphia in 1856; Thomas Prout with his wife and son settled in the Barbados in 1678
