Follow-up question: What determines the clipping levels?

A FET amplifier will clip when the output will exceed the operational levels of the FET. That is usually close to the supply voltage and close to ground. If you try to generate an output that will be higher than the supply by having too much gain, clearly the circuit can not generate more voltage than the supply so the output clips..
