In the last year I have developped an itchy rash under my wedding ring. Is this some form of eczema or is it an allergy to my ring (white gold with inset diamonds). It drives me wild, and it means I can't wear my wedding ring, as it flares as soon as I do. What can I do???

If your wedding ring is made of gold, this cannot be the cause of the itchy rash. Try rubbing on a regular skin moisturiser for a few days. If this fails, go for something more medical. White gold I think is a mix of either silver and gold or gold and platinum. Both silver and gold are unlikely to be the cause of your rash. Not sure about platinum if indeed that is a metal used to make gold more white. Check this out with your jeweller.

If the rash on your wedding finger has appeard during the winter/cold months, then it could be the result of indoor heating, cental heating in particular. This being the case, then you only need to rub in a skin cream which will add moisture to the skin.

One thing you must check immediately and this only applies if you have a pet dog or cat. Is your pet or pets suffering from scabies? This is a small red worm which lives under the skin and causes a serious red rash which is itchy. Even if you do not have a pet of your own, have you touched anyone elses dog or cat recently? You can do an immediate check for scabies by holding the finger with the rash under a bright lamp. If the rash appears to be moving, [the red worms], this is most likely then to be scabies.

What to do in the case of scabies? You'll need a doctor's prescription for an ointment which will get rid of the problem in a few days.

Do not worry about what I have said above. You probably do not have scabies. In any event, from what you have said about your rash, it seems an easy one to cure.

If you want to find out more about rashes you only need to type the word SKIN RASHES in your Google search slot and it will take you to thousands of possible sites. Check out the photographs on these sites and see if any of them match the kind of rash you have.

That happened to me with all of my rings.
I have permanent scars from the rashes. I found out it was the "hollow" rings that were doing it. You know, like when a ring is completely wrapped in gold except for the inside, usually close to where the gem is, there is an empty space.

Soap and lotions were getting trapped after I washed my hands, resulting in some painful rashes.

That, and I'm allergic to anything less than 10 karats.

Shoot! Now he's going to have to get you a new one! :)

I would contact the jewelery store the wedding band was bought at. White gold rings are not solid white gold they are generally something else like yellow gold or whatever dipped in white gold. This is why every 6 months to a year you are supposed to go get them re-dipped. If there is a cheaper metal under the white gold of the wedding band that could very well be your problem. If you contact the store they should be able to tell you what metal is under the white gold plating. As far as the rash keep up the cortizone cream and only wear your rings when your going out.

sounds like "contact dermatitis"
from the metal of your ring (gold is a metal)
if so, you may have to take ring off while rash clears up and just wear your ring occasionally

or

it could be from not rinsing the soap completely off your hands and some of the soap remains under the ring and causes the rash... so try making sure to rinse your hands thoroughly
also, could take ring off when doing dishes etc.

.... careful where you put the ring though - a lot of people have lost theirs down the drain !

I have the same problem when i were yellow gold however I can wear white gold. It a reaction to the alloys in your ring. You can try using clear polish on your ring, that might help or wear a different band.

It sounds like a skin allergy but to get it treated or diagnosed i recommend making an appointment with a dermatologist to rule out something bad and then if its only a certain allergy to metal you can trade your ring for a different one good luck

this sounds like a mild form of dermatitis,, also if you wear your ring all the time maybe when you wash your hands try taking of the ring so you can dry your finger properly as this could cause itching on the finger too hope this helps
