how do you want to furnish it? Our house was built in 1958. The basement was finished when we moved in the house in 2004. But the furnishings; decor, etc. screamed 1960's. Shag carpet in browns and oranges, tile from the 1950's, dark wood paneling and it was UGLY. My husband painted the walls and paneling white. We put down black and white floor tile. In the section when we put the tv area, we put down carpet; commercial. We bought a piece at a carpet store very inexpensively. We just laid it down over the existing tile. Didn't even glue or tack down. Lays great. The walls are just the concrete walls, but in older houses they had a texture. These are just painted. The ceiling was painted white also. We did our basement in retro on the bar end. The tv area is done in leather sofa. I can send pics if you want. It looks great and didn't cost much!!!!

Basements are very unpredictable areas. A lot of factors to take in consideration. Do they flood? are they very damp? First things first. If you are starting from scratch, meaning walls are bare. You might want to start by using a wall sealant. Home depot has an incredible wall sealant. It applies just like paint but seals perfectly. If you are going to cover the walls, by paneling or sheet rock, consider insulation. floors usually crack in basements, so you want to make sure the cracks don`t leak. Anything laid over that surface would be exposed to some serious damage. Plywood(even if cheap plywood is used) should be used to cover the floors. By covering walls and floors you can save yourself a lot of trouble with the furnishing. And avoid that nasty smell from a wet rug. A carpet that is laid over a concrete floor is a combination for bugs and smell. There are so many factors to basements that you wold need a book to see what better suits you, oh! speaking of books.....log on to WWW.HANDYMAN.COM
you`ll get what you want and some.....I`ve been a member for two years and ...and as a master carpenter i recommended to every do it yourselfers!! GOOD LUCK!

Just remember that basements can be damp. If your humidity is above normal down there, then get a dehumidifier or any carpet and furniture to put in will soon be smelly musty.

You can get a small humidistat at any home improvement store for only a couple dollars.

Fully furnished house. Though when I was younger I never, and can remember going 6 months with no sofa when I was only 19yrs old. Not good times ..The older I got, harder I worked, the more things I purchased.
