Actually, there is no such medical term as "nervous breakdown." Medical doctors do not use it.

The general public uses it to mean a complete emotional collapse.

But no, doctor will ever use it.

"Nervous breakdown" is not a medical term, but is one that is commonly used by people when trying to explain that they are feeling emotionally and mentally overloaded. Because of the stigma of mental illness, people feel more comfortable using this term than saying that they are "depressed" or "unable to cope," etc.

As to what it means - it can mean a whole number of things - including some of the things I already mentioned - depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and/or panic... pretty much everything and anything that might fall into the mental health area of life.

Seems it is easier for people to say "nervous breakdown" than to use other phrases. Interestingly, nervous breakdown was a phrase most commonly used in past when family members talked about the family member who became mentally ill - it was the polite way to describe an unpleasant situation that was stigmatizing.

No, it is not a medical term, it is just common usage! The way I see it, a whole load of stresses that you have been unable to deal with gets to you all at once and you can not function normally for a while as you feel so bad. Every nervous breakdown is different, and everyone experiences them differently. To get through it you keep yourself safe and warm and well-fed. Just know you will get through it, cos you will, you just do not know when. Eventually the feelings will get a bit better and you will gradually be able to start doing things again.

If it gets too bad, if you have never had one before or you are not coming out of it, go to your doctor.
