Often I walk outside and my mind wonders off thinking of different times, different places, and things I need to do etc. but as a meditation to reach a higher state of conscious I want to focus my thoughts purely on what I see, hear, smell, taste and feel.

Anyone know some exercises to synchronies your thoughts with your surroundings?

Or exercises to strengthen your concentration?

Well traditionally people start by reducing the stimuli to which they are exposed. Sit in a quiet place, in a comfortable position and count your breaths. Just one for in and two for out. Gradually drop the counting and just 'follow' your breath.

At first you will find your mind wanders. That's natural! But each time it does, return to listening to your breathing. Using that as a focus you can gradually expand your awareness into other parts of your body. Continue to return to your breathing when you are doing other things.

With time you will find you can do this in any situation, using your breath as an anchor to 're-centre' yourself.

This isn't a new technique. I was taught it as part of zen practice, but I'm sure there are books that cover the same thing without the religious aspects.

Just remember, actively concentrating can often have the opposite effect! Sometimes it's better to LET the mind wander and as soon as you come aware of this just 'call it back' with the breath. Gradually the wandering decreases, but it does take time!

Good luck!

You know, I have this problem too. It is really annoying. I've seen that people call this mind chatter. I think the best thing to do is whenever you realize you are doing this, just make yourself stop,. Look around and take in what you see, think about that instead. Soon your mind will wander again! Stop. Look around you and take it all in. Maybe try meditating for awhile each day. There are internet places that teach meditation. Good luck. Take care.

I would say the exercises you want are in the spiritual yoga realm. You might see if you can find a copy of the Ram Dass book "Be Here Now" which I haven't read in a while but, as I recall, has something of the sort you are looking for.

It's a lot nicer to live life in the latter state you spoke of. It's hard to stay in, and it just takes practice I think.
