I have booked to go to tunisia with my partner, and our daughter who will be 29 months old when we go.

It is booked for july so its going to be very warm, the flight is just under 4hrs.

Then the travel to the hotel transfer time is just under 2 hrs.
She is very active and hates sitting around! (dont most kids!)

She is intelligent and enjoys books etc, but her attention span is limited!

Any advice? Tips? Anything at all about traveling/flying etc with a toddler!

Have a lot of surprise snacks available!

Keep some Benedryl in your bag in case she needs some relief from the ear pressure of landing (speak to your pediatrician first obviously)..and have her ears checked for fluid/ infection before flying.

Make sure you have lollipops and a sippy cup filled with juice. It will make landing much easier on her. Check with your airline to see what their regulations on liquids is..or that they will have juice available on the flight.

Keep a back pack of some of her favorite toys and have a few brown paper bags with a "surprise" in them. You can get inexpensive things at the Dollar Store if you have one near you..but for example...a new Barbie, some playdoh..etc. Give one to her about every 45 minutes...to avoid getting to the tantrum boredom stage that all 2-year-olds get to.

Also..if you can make sure she is tired before she flies..maybe she will sleep on the plane..or...it may make it worse..you know your child best.

Good Luck!

We travelled with our daughter in November last year, she was nearly 2 and a half. She took her own wheelie case/carry on bag and we had loaded with new books, games, disney princess cards for snap, travel connect 4, colour and a small colouring book and all sorts of little bits and bobs that she'd never seen before! She was so delighted with her books she didn't get anything else out of the bag until we reached our hotel! I would recommend getting a travel pillow and blanket as we were very lucky and she slept thru about half of the flight. the pillow and blanket were indispensible! We also let our daughter sit by the window for take off and kept her as busy as we could.

Once we landed an elderly couple in front of us and the stewardess said said she was one of the best behaved kids they'd ever had on a plane! I was so damn proud!!

Just try and stay calm with her and it'll all be ok!!!

Colouring books and travel games etc..but u need to check with the airline about security, as u probably know, it has been tightened alot!!
Maybe if u cant take this stuff with you, you can look out of the window and look at the shapes of the clouds at the start, then you can tell her all about how the plane stays up in the air, and turn it into a lesson on gravity!!
You will need to do some reading up on the subject, but she will probably enjoy it, and the time will go faster!

Good luck, hope this helped!

Not so sure about the traveling but you'll be fine once you get there. Tunisian people absolutly LOVE kids.
I was there in Oct and there was a little french girl running around. She was hardly with her parents, all the bar staff and the entertainment guys would have her on their shoulders etc.
There was always kids clubs on and the entertainment guys were always in the pool or playing football with the kids.
I was in the older section of Hammamet *sp*

Most of the tunisian people can speak 4 or 5 languages, more for the hotel staff and people who make a living out of tourists also.

Have fun in Tunisia, you'll never want to come home, believe me!! :)

I am fairly experienced with travelling with small children, (a 27 hour flight back from Australia with just myself and a 4 month old for a start!), for a toddler obviously books, colouring books, small toys or games etc are great. I also recommend a walkman with story or music tapes. That helped a great deal for my 2 year old on a 9 hour flight to Florida.

It's also very very beneficial to have a great deal of patience! Have a great holiday!

Take lots of snacks for on the plane. I suggest that you take her favorite snacks on the plane so she is happy and doesn't bother other travelers. If you are sitting next to a stranger, try to be courteous and apologize in advance for any crying. The person will be much more accommodating and very much less agitated if she does start crying. Once you are in the air, you can walk her up the aisles or you can set her on the floor and let her play in your row. The fight attendants might even offer to walk her up the aisles for you. Let them. If you have a portable DVD player- take it! Take coloring books and crayons. Just try to keep her calm and happy. Try to get her to nap while she's on the plane. If you can afford it, get her her own seat. It'll make it SOSOSOSO much nicer for you!
Take your time after you land. Let her run round while your hubby get the luggage. She'll be much happier about sitting for another 2 hours if she gets to release some of her couped up energy.

A little bit of advice, take some things along with you that you know she will enjoy. Maybe a portable DVD player and her favorite movies, or coloring books, things of that nature. Focus a lot of attention on her, read her books and try to keep her calm to where she doesnt disturb the whole plane. Also, take some of her favorite foods in a snack size amounts. This usually calms our 2 yr old.

Here are somethings I just got for a 3hour flight with my 3rd old.

A Melissa and Doug brand Puzzle, with pieces that move around - dont come off.

Scratch and sniff stickers in a book.

Little book with buttons, zippers, things to fasten.

Small puppets.

Craft foam stickers.

Lots of unhealthy snacks like Lucky Charms cereal.

Im also thinking of getting him a pair of crocs - or the fake ones - for easy on/off thru the checkpoints where you have to take your shoes off. We're also using a backpack to carry him around in. Baby bjorn plastic bibs are great too, since you can just wipe them off.

All the activity ideas are great and must haves for any journey with a tot.
If possible though I would suggest altering her routine slightly just before you go, so that the travel time is her 'night-time' or nap time etc - then hopefully she will sleep throughout most of the journey!

make sure you have alot of colouring pencils and books and things.
On my 3 year old first flight I took a small bag and I let him put all the things that he wanted to take to play with, i let him choose.
