Dogs do better in the summer because its easyer to to teach them to go out side to go to the bathroom cause its not as cool out

I would think that a sheltie/lab combo is a pretty hearty dog. I don't understand why it would make a difference as to the time of year.

One of my dogs was a sheltie mix and she would lay on the snow even when it was cold. However my pugs don't like the cold weather and sometimes run back into the house when they don't want to go out.

When can she spend the most time with the dog? I think that would answer the question better.

If you have the choice when to get the dog, get him in the spring or summer. It is a lot easier to house train a puppy when it is warm. If you live somewhere where the weather is nice all the time then it doesn't really matter. Just remember, your going to be going outside time after time standing outside waiting for the puppy to go to the bathroom.

Well depending on the type of dog, it will tell you the season. if it's going to grow into a big dog with lots of fur then you might want to get it in cooler weather. but if it's a small dog without alot of fur to cover itself up, go with the warmer months. but remember, if it is going to be in the summer make sure that it gets plenty of water, no matter how much it's going to need a bathroom break. also in the winter, keep your puppy inside, or else they can get sick just like people.

Summer as far as getting a new puppy. You can take more time to properly potty train them outside, and take more time to play outside as well. In the winter it can be tough....it's cold and that combined with snow on the ground can be a terrioble distractionfor a puppy, making it difficult to train.

i would reccomend the summer, because a new puppy would definetly make "accidents" and its the best time to potty train them, and simple commands such as sit, stay etc. are better taught outside because then the puppy can interact w/ u more and then there's more space outside so he/ she can bond by playing w/ u because the first few months w/ a dog are very important to build a good relationship

i got my pup in november (cold). i've had a hard time training her because i don't want to be outside (she is an outside dog). if i could do it again, i would get her in the spring (warm).

however, just as a disclaimer, my dog LOVES the cold. her fur is so thick, she runs and plays everytime it snows. she does have warm and dry place to sleep, and extra food to keep her metabolism up.

for your friend, though, i'd recommend march-april. it is easier to spend time training the pup.

better yet, how about go to the shelter and adopt an adult! they often are already house broken! good luck.

I agree,it's dependent on the breed. Some breeds such as the "bully"type dogs don't do well in either extreme hot or extreme cold. Your friend needs to research what kind of breed will suit her lifestyle best and then do more research on the breed and what it takes to be a proper pet guardian.
