There are usually two types of "animal cops".
The first is the Humane Society enforcement officer, who is not technically a po-lice, but a civil servant, and whose only enforcement powers pertain to safety and health of domestic animals. This usually requires no special training for entrance level hiring other than general civil service qualification.
What you are probably referring to is a regular police officer, which, in some large cities which can afford to support such a special unit, have police officers who deal with animal violation cases. These are regular street police who must train and qualify as officers like any other on the relevant force. To become this type of animal cop, you must go through the same procedures of application, acceptance, and training, then apply for the special animal enforcement unit.
For more information, contact your local, county, or state authorities.

When I worked at our local animal sheter the animal control officers didn't have a specific type of formal training. I do believe this varies with each area. Check with your local humane society and they can give you resources on how to be an "animal cop" in the area you live.

If you are old enough to work, contact your local animal control agency and ask about available positions. Also contact the local humane societies or wildlife rehabilitation clinics and ask about volunteering or available paid positions. Usually these are good stepping stones to a career with working with at-risk animals.

You need to build your resume with experience from law enforcement, as well as animal welfare. Go to a police academy, get some education in law enforcement, animal behavior and welfare. Do some volunteer work in a vet clinic, shelter. Learn absolutely everything you can from both and you will be more qualified! Best to you!
