I live the the greater DC area where there are a ton of car dealers. I'm looking to purchase an AWD 2007 Acadia and the base model seems to be in short supply. I am within a short drive of Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, the greater Baltimore area, etc. With so many dealers within a couple hours drive, would it make sense to have a car buying service have all the dealers compete to get me the best price?

Can they really get me a better deal than doing the foot work myself?

FYI...for those wondering why I need an AWD model. I travel to the midwest often and the winters in the midwest are no joke. If I do any traveling west of the DC area between November and March snow storms are common, especially when driving through the mountains in Pennsylvania

When I was in the market for a new car, I called on dealer with the following statement, " I want XXXX and the price of $$$$$ If you find it, you get the sale." He did and even loaned me a car free until mine came in from another city in the State ten days later.

But I had done that after online leg work and a few tests drives, to know exactly what I wanted, features, color, etc., and price. I did not regret my decision to let one salesman reap the benefit.

But to use a car buying service, NO I would not pay them!

No, You should find a dealer close to you that is willing to locate the car your looking for, Dealers often trade cars to get their customers what they are looking for, If the dealership you are looking at isn't willing to work for you its not worth buying from them, The price can still be negotiated on. The end of the month has proven to provide better deals due to sales quota not being met. Best bet is just to be patient and take your time, they want to sell you a car so let them meet you at least half way on a reasonable price. Also if The Base model is very hard to find you might not be able to get much off of the retail price. If the dealership has 7 fully loaded versions you might be able to negotiate a better price on one of those loaded models due to them not selling. So don't be afraid to look in to those. One last thing.... If you live around DC why do you need AWD?

Checked all these so called buying services and guess what? They all have the same exact software, which leads me to believe it's a waste of time to even consider them whether it's free or not all work for the dealers. Not one is different!

no, they will charge you a fee for their services...

contact a dealership tell them what you want and they can either dealer trade with another dealership if they don't have the vehicle or if you can what a couple months they can order the vehicle for you.

on vehicles like the Acadia where there is a high demand and low supply you aren't going to be able to negotiate the price as much either

There are some people who do not have an issue with money (not me though) and they don't care about spending the cash to get what they want simply because they have no time available due to work hours, business travel, etc...

If you look at it from this point of view, it becomes a little more clear.
