I just purchased a Quaker on Friday, he was great for the first day, acted like he was happy, jumping around, singing. As of yesterday he has not talked, he seems to clean his feathers, as well as loosing some "down," and bites his feet. I have a ton of toys for him and have him half covered. Could this just be stress and how long should it last before I should be worried?

Most palaces have a vet who knows about quakers etc. either ask them or the person or place you got him from-I would take out the toys for a week or so cover him and put him in a quiet room until he adjusts to his new home-He may be overwhelmed with your love and needs alone time for just a bit-I have worked in a pet shop and at a vets and have had other birds-I think you will find he destresses and will soon be your best friend-the first day he may not have realized he wasn't going back home-GOOD LUCK

The "happiness" you described on his first day was excitement and confusion, not cheer. The feather loss and excessive preening is a common sign of stress. Give him some space, talk to him, give him very little handling (5 minutes at a time, up to 3x a day) and he'll come round pretty quick. Make sure he has adequate access to fresh water, and keep disturbances around his cage (frequent door opening, running children, etc) to a minumum for about a week. This will help him to adjust to his new environment. Offering him fruit treats, like diced apples or raisins will give him something to look forward to, and he'll be your little buddy in no time!

Birds usually take 30-45 days to settle into a new home. Having just bought him, have him looked at by a vet. When you buy a new bird, you should always have it checked out within a week, just to make sure it's nice and healthy.

I wouldn't worry about him, he's just getting use to his new mommy. Good luck.
