Genesis 32:29-30: "And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. "
God face to face? I thought it was an angel, he was, urr, "wrestling with"...

deegarry: anyone who sees Yahweh face to face would die. This is El, the God of Jacob. At the time of writing, it wasn't believed that El and Yahweh were the same deity.

According to the Scriptures, it was an angel. In verse 29 of Genesis, Jacob is inquiring the name of the one he was grappling with. However, he said: "Why is it that you inquire for my name?" That corresponds to Judges 13:18 which reads: However, Jehovah's angel said to him: "Just why should you ask about my name, when it is a wonderful one?" Do you recognize the similarites between the two Scriptures? So, Jacob was grappling with an angel.

Jesus said He was slain from the foundation of the world. Therefore Jesus was always with God. In Genesis in the beginning it said "and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." So both Jesus and the Holy Spirit were there in the beginning when God created it all.
Hosea 12:4 says Jacob wrestled an angel. Israel spiritually wrestled with God and Israel must come to the end of itself and find its strength in God alone. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord and Jesus will return.
If Jacob or Israel wrestled with God it was Jesus who wrestled because He is the only human manifestation of God.

The answer to those who quote, "None can see God and live" is the statement by John after making clear that Jesus IS God Himself: "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him" (John 1:18). Thus, every appearance by God in the Old Testament was actually an appearance by Jesus before His incarnation, explaining who God really is. Contrary to what many wish, this actually means that Jesus IS God, for that is what the Old Testament prophets called Him.

The pre- incarnate Jesus was the Old Testament "Angel of the Lord".Jacob recognized that as did Joshua(take off your shoes where you stand is Holy Ground),Gideon ,Samson's parents and Abraham(by the Terebinth trees)and Moses
"No man has seen God at any time, the son of God reveals Him"John said that.
Jesus said He was the one who talked to Moses when he said "Before Abraham was I AM"John 8:58,which meant 'I'm the one who said I AM THAT I AM ,the self existing one'.

Jacob wrestled with the lord or atleast the lord in the form of a man...Possibly the Son but way before the birth of Christ.

Some people think it was an instance of Jesus appearing in the flesh before his incarnation. I don't think it's a biggie either way, but you can look up Christophany in some references if you like -- below is one from Wikipedia.

I love that story. I believe that he was indeed wrestling with an angel. No one can see God and live (in the flesh anyway)
