I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry,

You might run your Anti-virus scan.

Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not need. Keep your Anti-virus checked.

If you are looking to block out ActiveX controls that put spyware on your computer Spyware Blaster is an excellent program that you can use totally free. If you are worried about all ActiveX controls then switch to Firefox to do your web browsing.

for spyware...SpySweeper 5.3 is an excellent product...about $10 after rebates. I use it on many systems and it is also highly rated by PC Magazine. Good luck.

Synmatec Norton AntiVirus works very well, also try McAfee.
