Use yellow onions & add more chilies (powder & fresh green).
They work best here. You cant get those lovely small Indian purple onions, thin skinned lemons, red carrots..... here in the US.
It's a shame, you'll miss "hapuus amba" the most!

I interpret that you now live in the States? Yes, indeed it is very sad how it is almost impossible to get good spicy onions anymore in most of the USA unless you are near farms growing them, or growing white industrial onions. I have asked consumer produce market owners about this and they just claim Americans only want sweet onions. Fortunately I travel to Quebec a lot where they still sell sharp, spicy, hard small onions (they call them cooking onions) - and they are usually cheap, too, sometimes less than 75 cents for a 10-pound bag. You can also get medium sized yellow spicier onions there, and I know that many are grown in Ontario. So if you live near the border take a little trip.
Otherwise, I would suggest you check of course some Indian groceries near you. If there are none check Indian restaurants restaurants and ask what their source might be. Or find out who might be what better local ethnic restaurants of any cuisine think is the best wholesale produce purveyor that sells specialty spicy onions and check with it to see if it will allow you to buy some.

Where I live, there are several Indian grocery stores - I buy my veggies there - if I can't find them at my local grocery store, or farm market. The other option you have is to grow your own onions. If you're just using them for curry, then you can process and freeze the preped onion. It won't be good to eat raw after it defrosts, but it's great for cooking - most of the water has leached out.
Good luck!

If you are here in the United States, try asking the produce manager at your local grocery store what hot onions he can order for you. I believe Spanish onions are quite hot, hope this helps you.
