Call it the most off the wall concept, but it actually works (not one of those drunk hiccups though) I use a tech. called the "Old little pinky in the ear" trick. Now it does sound like the most off the wall concept and many people might say, "Im not going to stick my little finger in my ear", but it really does work. Next time you get those hiccups and it is just driving you crazy, try sticking your little finger in your ear and see if they stop. I was told this when I was about 13 yrs old and I thought too it was off the wall, but to this day I swear by it.

Hiccups are caused by your diaphram "twitching" or spasms if you will, from your autonomic nervous system, not your stomach itself, therefore all of these ingestion remedies are nothing more than "placebo"(mind over matter).

LOL...I asked this question last week. Here's my foolproof method...
Put some water in a GLASS
Cover the glass with a PAPER TOWEL
Drink the water through the paper towel. Drink as much as you can before you stop for air.

Repeat if necessary, but it usually works the first time!

Take a spoon full of sugar..let it melt in the mouth (don't chew ) and melt down the back of the throat...my Mom, an ER nurse, said the Dr's there used it all the time..and so has my family, friends, etc...it ALWAYS works...
My dentist (I helped him with his hiccups), told me they use salt on the back of the tongue for people with short "gag" reflexes...

Cool one. I'll have to try it next time I get the hiccups. I go with the old one, "drink water upside-down.". Just get a glass of water, tilt your head forward, and sip water. It usually works!

I just use the hold your breath method. Works for me and hiccups are a big deal to me, unless they occur for a long time, then it will really start to get me ticked.

I was told once to swallow air and that I would know when it works because I would feel it. Well, I tried it and afterwards (almost immediately) I felt my stomach gurgle- the hiccups were gone!

I generally suck in air through my mouth and hold it for at least 20 - 30 seconds, then swallow, then exhale the air, this generally always works for me, this is also helpful when you don't have access to water or "other items."

A spoon full of peanut butter actually works better for me than sugar.
