He was speaking of anyone who did not want to hear the word, but rejected Him- if someone does not want to hear the gospel and you are trying to share it with them, we are to "shake the dust from our feet" and move on. Not cast our pearls before swine, because the gospel of Jesus Christ is a beautiful pearl!

He was talking about not gentiles in general, but rather "unclean" people who as a whole had rejected God and Jesus. Why would one give the fruits of the Spirit to those who would reject them and trample them under feet?

He was speaking of Christians wasting their time sharing the Truth of God with unbelievers that have so hardened their hearts against God that it would be a fruitless exercise....
like giving expensive jewels to fools who would hock them for a few dollars to feed their drug addictions.....
what would be accomplished?
absolutely nothing but the wasting of fine jewels.
