I am considering moving to Atlanta. I'm a single parent and want to put my child in a good Elementary School. I want to live in a decent neighborhood of mixed cultures, but not too expensive. Also somewhere where the driving wouldnt be more than about 30 minutes to get to work if I worked somewhere in downtown or Midtown Atlanta. I don't mind living in the burbs as long as it is decent, considered fairly safe, close to schools, & shopping and not far from work (again if that ends up being somewhere in atlanta downtown or near there). I've never been to the ATL, so I would appreciate as much information as possible, including childcare references, etc. Recreation and sports activities such as basketball, swimming and other good community center information will also be helpful. If I can get some good information based on good areas to live, I'm sure I can do the research on the rec centers and childcare though.

Thank you

At 30 miles from downtown you will be on the line of what is a good area and what is not. I do not think you will find an area downtown with good schools that is not extremely expensive. You can check ajc.com they have a school guide that you can look up and compare different school in Atlanta and the surrounding suberbs. I am really pleased with Paulding county. Paulding is probally a little more than 30 miles though. It would take 30 mins to get to downtown with good traffic an hour during rush hour. I used to live in Stockbridge it was really growing when I lived there 10 years ago. My son was not in school at the time so I can not tell you about the schools. Douglas County has some good schools if you get 5 miles or so away from I-20 with the Chapel Hill area being the best area for schools.

I have to say that it is going to be VERY hard for you to get all of that. Here is the reason: Atlanta schools are not very good. To get a good school system you need to be in North Cobb County (Marrietta, Kennesaw), North Fulton County (Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Norcross), or Lawrenceville. Now you can find reasonable prices in these areas too, and mixed culture. But none of these are 30 minutes from Midtown. If you drove at 6 am and came back at 7 pm you could probably make it to any of these in about 30 minutes. At rush hour, anywhere in or near Atlanta could easily be an hour plus. Everything you hear about Atlanta traffic is true. So if you do not have a job lined up, consider just working in the suburbs as well. I do not know what you do, but most of the suburbs of Atlanta are really like self-contained cities. Marrietta, Kennesaw, Lawrenceville, Alpharetta are all suburbs that have a lot of jobs, shopping, restaurants, and are bigger than most "self-contained" cities in the country. Living within 30 minutes really puts you right in the city area. Anything bigger than a condo or apartment will be expensive (BTW, the water bills in Atlanta are HUGE, about 4-5 times bigger than anywhere else I have lived in the country. Not the suburbs though). Also the schools are not great unless you go with private. This is obviously very expensive. The suburbs are a great place to raise a kid. Consider being more self contained to the suburb for work, and just go to the city for fun. Good Luck.

Not from Atlanta, have traveled there on many occasions. Military wife (and Realtor) so I've moved often. The best way to research schools is to go online and search for school districts by county (atl, etc. ) read the schools stats, that will help you determine things like safety, quality-student scores, etc. Search county stats online-police stats. Contact a Realtor tell her/him your moving to the area let the Realtor know what you can afford to spend and what your looking for(schl dist, safety, close to work, etc) she can help you find an area that suits your needs and lead you to websites that will help you get some of the answers you need. also try to contact some of the city agencies that may be able to provide some answers to your Q's. Hope it works out for you.

im 15 but i've lived in georgia all my life. i know that the cities of acworth or kennesaw are fairly safe to raise a child. i was raised there. it has many good recreational facilities and is close to a mall and has a good board of education. the only thing is that if there is a lot of traffic in the morning, it might take you a little longer than 30 minutes to get to downtown. but im just making a suggestion but you should check it out online or something. just do a google or yahoo search on kennesaw, GA or Acworth,GA. hope i'm of a little bit of help!

The intown public school system is known to be horrible so I unless you can afford private school, I would suggest Cobb or Gwinnett counties. These counties include the cities of Marietta, Smyrna, Duluth, Lawrenceville & Suwannee.

Check out Henry County. It is the 6 fastest growing county in the entire us but still has that laid back family atmosphere. Located about 15min south of the airport most of henry county is easily accesable to a couple of major interstates which are a must around Atlanta. Good luck and Welcome!
