Our 1998 Tdi is running very poorly. Particularly under acceleration, but also during normal driving it hesitates under acceleration. The amount of hestitation varies wildly - sometimes it seems to bog down and won't move, other times its more of a slight feeling of being underpowered. When the engine gets hot (say after 30mins of driving) it sometimes stalls when we stop the car.

What could the problem be please?

check your timing , you might just need a tune up and your timing adjusted, or you may need your timing belt replaced asthey get worn they sometimes jump a tooth.
also check your distributor

Hi

First of all, seeing as how this is a diesel engine and not a petrol engine, there will be no carbs or distributors to check out.

If I'm not mistaken, the later Endura DE engines in Ford Escorts are not intercooled, and therefore we can rule out the intercooler pipe coming adrift, but there could be a hole in the turbo pipework, or loose turbo pipework.

I also think they have a MAF sensor by the air filter housing in the inlet trunking. Disconnect the wiring plug from the MAF and see if it makes any difference.

Another problem these engines have is the pump timing solenoid on the fuel pump, and the boost capsule, also on the fuel pump.

Other checks would be the EGR valve sticking open and the coolant sensor, and maybe even failed injectors.

If there is any white smoke from the exhaust then you may find the the fuel primer diaphragm has split inside the housing, which is another common problem with these engines, or even a simple fuel air leak.

Is there any black or white smoke from the exhaust?

Cheers

Geordie

I have a 95 TD, and had a similar problem. Firstly get your glow plugs checked. If the tips are black but the rest of the shaft is a kind of transparent grey, then the plugs are on the way out. If the whole plug looks burned then replace it. Incidentally buy the heavy duty ones the cost about £3 ($5) more each, but last for an eternity. If that doesn't solve the problem, you will almost definitely have blocked injectors. There is a really good mixture you can buy that goes into the fuel tank with a full tank of diesel and will clean the injectors as the diesel is used. I can't remember the name of it, but I'm sure you could find it on the net, it's about £15 ($20) and you use it once. Hope that helps :) IT@tonicweb.co.uk

Oh yeah, and ignore all references above to distributors as you don't have one, nor spark plugs, and your ecu is unlikely. None of these are going to be your problem. Although the hole in the turbo is not beyond the realms...

My b/f is a ford mechanic and he has just told me that it would more than likely be either of two things, one or maybe 2 of your injectors may have gone down, in which would cause poor running, lack of power etc, the other is that it might be that the turbo pipe has come off of had a hole worn in it as apparently this is quite common and causes massive power losses and would cause the car to be taking the wrong readings of air/fuel mixture. Either way he said it will be expensive, sorry

When was it last serviced? may need filters air,oil and fuel.. or even a faulty/dirty injector. It wont be the distributor, diesels dont have one. Try running a cleaner such as redex in with the fuel
