I went through a drug study program that studied the effects of Buspar on people with Irritable Bowl Syndrome...(in the early 90's)...when I was given the real drug, it made me feel woozy (dizzy) and "spaced out".....I did not like it....(and it did nothing for my IBS...at all)...I am now on Prozac for anxiety myself..have been for 7 years...been real happy with it...

I believe (but i'm not 100% on this) that buspar can have some strong and unpleasant side effects and can even make you more anxious because it is a stimulating drug. may i suggest you have a look at dr bob's psycho-babble discussion website. it deals with depression and anxiety drugs - you can do a search for buspar and read about peoples experiences on it.

My doctor prescribed it to me last year as a short term "fix".

I was with a group of canoeists and we found a man who'd hung himself by the river we were paddling down. Not very pleasant. A few days later I got quite upset about it and living on my own at the time i found it hard to sleep as I kept visualising the scene.

It gets to work quite quickly and it worked for me in the situation I was in - having a reaction to a bad event. I only needed it for a short time, which I believe is what it's suited to.

I had no side effects, but that's not saying no-one else won't.

In personal exerience I have found that ATIVAN seems to work quite well and quickly for anxiety. A good doctor will prescribe it with instructions allowing you to adjust your own dosage (within reasonable means) to accomated several phases of anxiety, (i.e. from a half of a pill to two whole pills depending on how you feel at the time-a half if you are feeling a little anxious and want to nip it in the bud to 2 pills if you are in "total freak out" mode and need more sedation)...I have found it to work well and can be used with pain meds or sleeping pills (ALWAYS inform your doctor of exactly what you are taking and how much to avoid interactions)

Much of the people I know who've tried it claim it to be worthless. Not to mention, it has horrible side effects and you have to take it every day for it to be effective. It affects the brain chemical dopamine instead of GABA, like the benzos do. This can make you feel very depressed or apathetic.
If you don't have an addictive personality, just get some benzos instead and use them as needed.

i did years ago - i didn't know they still prescribed it - i hated it
i just got dizzy and felt a little sick - they try to give you that first because it is non-addictive - - ask for klonopin - it's not very addictive - just use as needed and it works very fast

good luck
