Does this work? I have a 2006 VW Golf TDI that takes FOREVER to warm up in anything colder then -15°C. My commute is 45 minutes one way on all highway driving (80 km/h). Some say thats the way diesels are, some say the thermostat could be stuck open. I don't know. I am looking for people who have a VW or know about them to help me with this. Carrying blankets and having the heated seats cranked sucks Thanks

that will help during the cold of winter. make sure you dont cover any more than about 1/3 to 1/2 of the radiator.

The thing is, if the engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed....until the engine warms up. And it should within 5 miles. Diesels will pour out the heat much more than gas pots - thats the way gas is. Diesel heats up more so climbing hills. Going downhill and flat it takes awhile as it is not working hard(thats why you get the better fuel economy)
I have put cardboard in,(from a cereal box). Don't cover it completely. 3/4 is good. And take it out when the weather warms up. Keeping the engine cool keeps the oil thicker = less engine wear.
It will help for now.
I have been meaning to do it, maybe later.

Yes, this does work. however, in some cases, once the engine builds heat, the radiator may not get enough air flow. With my old truck, I would cover a part of the radiator, so that part was still exposed.

Well while you are working on the warm up problem, simply buy and accessory electrical heater and plug it into the cigarette lighter. Got 2 lighter sockets.. get two heaters..

Just remember to UNPLUG them when you get where you are going or when the car heater starts working or you will have a dead battery when you leave work.

yes this works, when you cover the radiator leave a hole the same size and location as the fan(s) this will allow them to operate without being stressed by having the hole off centre , don't forget to remove the cardboard when the weather improves
