Our 3 month old lab puppy was fine Friday am. He was wormed Friday. Within 2 hours, he appeared sick. Called the vet, given reasurrance. Took him in Sat am when vet opened. Gave him 2 shots. Sent us home. He died Sat pm. He was healthy and robust. Vet assures us it could not have been worm medicine.

No - the worm medicine is safe...for humans too. What two shots did he receive? When you say. "Appeared sick" what do you mean?

I can only think of a few things that would take a puppy down that fast and that would be: Parvo, an intestinal blockage, a vaccine reaction or a congenital birth defect.

You need more answers from your Vet.

EMILY - Heartworms and intestinal parasites have NOTHING to do with one another - deworming a dog does nothing for heartworms - sorry. It does not effect a dogs blood or heart, only the intestinal tract.

I can't say that I know this for a fact, and no i have never heard of worming killing a puppy, but there is a first time for everything. If your puppy was absolutley fine before, then what other possibilities do you have? Well sure he could have at somehthing, but surley nothing that would have killed him. Plus, if it was something the else the vet should have been able to figure that out! If you ever get anther dog, I would suggest going to another vet. But good Luck, and I'm very sorry about your puppy. I would do some research and see what you can find out. Good Luck ♥♥♥

Well I dont really need to answer this one because the first girl the vet tech is right on!!. I work for an animal clinic myself and have never seen worming meds kill any dogs or cats the whole time I have been there. It could have been something the dog already had wrong with him to begin with that the vet did not catch on too at the visit.Maybe see about having an autopsy done the vet I work for does them for free to know what happend or what she may have missed maybe ask the vet if they do that. Im sorry for ur loss.

I am really surprised that your vet did not do a more thorough examination, ie, full blood panel etc. given that your pup was clearly very ill indeed. The pup should have been hospitilised and stabilised until such time as a diagnosis could be made. I would be changing vets immediately!
Unlikely that worming would have caused such a severe reaction, although many of my pups have gone off colour or developed the runs after worming which is why I much prefer natural rearing as opposed to stuffing poisons down dogs' throats. Severe allergic reactions to vaccinations are not all that uncommon

If he got his puppy shot it could have been that. There are a lot of dogs that are allergic to the lepto vaccine and need to be given an antihistamine shot ASAP. If he didn't get an antihistamione shot till saturday it may have been an allergic reaction to the shot.

The worm meds are fine they are not going to hurt anything but the worms.

my vet uses parvo to deworm. We have never had a problem and we raise yorkies. The 2 shots i would wonder about, but also you should have had some kind of health gurantee when you bought the dog. you need to get intouch with who ever sold you the dog and you need to know what happened. If is was a genetic trait the mother or father should not be breed again. They need to know this.

I haven't heard of any common allergic reactions to wormer and your vet should have recognized it if that's what it was. A slightly more likely cause could be heartworm. Puppies can get it from the mother, if he had a very bad case and was then wormed the worms will clog the blood flow as they die and kill the dog.
What do you know of where he was raised? Was he and his mother wormed regularly? Other than that it could be about anything. Parvo is generally recognizable, and they are Very sick but it could kill quickly like mentioned. Or a genetic fault that suddenly had an effect on him. I'm sorry he died but it will be hard to say why.

we have seen bichons showing a severe reaction to worming products given at the vet, i understand how upset you are, i would advise never getting worming tabs from the vet.

It was not the worming medication.

Sometimes puppies just die, you would need to get a post moretim to find out the reason.

Actually, the Ivermectin in heartworm killer can result in the buildup of chemicals in the brains of certain breeds who cannot process it right to cause death, such as Collies and Aussies, but I don't think it applys to labs
