In healthy humans, the elimination half-life of Biaxin (clarithromycin), that has been taken at a dose of 500 mg every 8 to 12 hours, is about 7 to 9 hours.

That means that the drug and all its active metabolites will clear or, be eliminated from your body, by 50% in 7 to 9 hours.

The clinical standard for "out of your body" is 5.5 times the half-life. so using 9 as the elimination half-life, the total time would be 49.5 hours or about 2 1/2 to 3 days.

This is a quick and rough way to determine a first order chemical reaction elimination rate; and is simple kinetics.

Drugs often have many active metabolites which must be considered.

Say you take the pill 4 times a day, that means 1 tablet every 6 hours. In that case the pill stays in your system 6 hours, which is why you have to take another one after 6 hours.

They have these pills you take 1 tablet a month, you only take 1 a month because it stays in your system for a month.
