why does the universe look like it is about 14 billiion years old and the earth look like it is about 4.5 billion years old? Why would God create a universe that from human observation, appears to be much older than what is indicated in the bible?

The universe looks like it is 14 billion years old because ... it is 14 billion years old. Not too much of a mental leap I hope.

The Bible does not indicate the exact age of the earth. The Hebrew word for 'day' found in the book of Genesis is 'yom.' The Hebrews use the word 'yom' when referring to any set length of time. They used it to refer to days, seasons, etc.

So, when the Bible says that God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh, it doesn't necessarily refer to a literal six day creation.

Here is the exact definition from Strom's Hebrew Dictionary:

yôm
yome
From an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literally (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figuratively (a space of time defined by an associated term), (often used adverbially): - age, + always, + chronicles, continually (-ance), daily, ([birth-], each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), + elder, X end, + evening, + (for) ever (-lasting, -more), X full, life, as (so) long as (. . . live), (even) now, + old, + outlived, + perpetually, presently, + remaineth, X required, season, X since, space, then, (process of) time, + as at other times, + in trouble, weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), X whole (+ age), (full) year (-ly), + younger.

I hope this clears things up!

The Genesis is a creation mythology, an image of an eternal Universe. On the scale of eternity, even to modern science 14 Billion years isn't very long compared to infinity, its a sort of a guideline. What if scientists were asked well what was happening say 100 Billion years ago? This is how the theologians answered the question, since it is a cornerstone of their religion it required an explanation

The universe is quite previous. the thought some so-called Christians have that the worldwide grew to become into created in six 24 hour days is definitely ridiculous. as an occasion, God entered right into a relax day after the six imaginative days. in accordance to Paul, that relax day grew to become into nonetheless getting in his day over 4000 years after it began out. Christians nonetheless have the prospect to flow into into that relax day, now approximately 6000 years long. information is that Christ's 1000 365 days reign will join God's relax day simply by fact by the tip of that 1000 365 days reign the earth would be restored to paradise and mankind would be restored to the suited sinless situation as Adam grew to become into created. All issues considered, each imaginative day could be approximately 7000 years long. however the Bible does not say how long the universe grew to become into created before the six days of making waiting the earth for human habitation began. this might enable for the billions of years of the existence of the massive universe before God grew to become his interest to the earth to make it a house for guy.

It all depends on how you collect your data.

i.e. - Rocks are dated by the fossils in them.
Fossils are dated by the rock in them.

This is called circular reasoning and is not acceptable in science.

This method of dating rocks and fossils was started in the 1800's. A man drew up what is called the "geologic column".
He had little to go on. But ever since than it is taken as a science fact even though it is in error.

Carbon dating is not accurate either. Do a web search with the key words "carbon dating accuracy". Basically if you know how old an item is to be tested, they will not test it. If you say you do not know how old (or that it is very old) they will test it.

There is a great pamphlet "What Does the Bible Say About Astronomy?" by Dr. John Lisle, Ph.D. in astrophysics at the Answers in Genesis Web site that could help answer your question:

The same concept exists in Islam and the scholars refer to that as Gods days being a different thing than human days.

i.e. One day in Gods level is equal to a couple of billion of years.

Its a theory ofcourse, one we cannot completely proove or disprove.

The actual selection of the elect is based on their ability to use the brain the Creator gave them. This life is a test, it is only a test, if it were a real life, you would have been told where to go and what to do.

let's see here.....
fallable, God-created humans seem to think the universe is 14 billion years old....
but God says it isn't.....
(not really true but we will leave that arguement for another time)
which leads to.....
God must be a liar?
the created criticizing the Creator?
that is the height of human foolishness!
