Does anyone have any recommendations on toys that would be good for my puppy that is teething? He is 9 weeks old and starting to bit with his very very sharp teeth. Thanks in advance!

Puppies gums will be sore and swollen as the teeth try to erupt threw the gums, so think things which are:

'cold' and 'soft'

I used to get a tea towel or soft toy and put it in the freezer, then I'd put an ice cube in the towel and let puppy chew it. A cold tea towel on it's own is also good, but I found with ice cubes better.

If your puppy is very dominant or alpha it is best not to play tug of war. Just tie the ice cube in the cloth (with the excess cloth of the tea towel . . . don't use an elastic band or another piece string which can get trap in puppies throat))

You can also give peanut butter popsicles to puppy (but outside, as they can get really messy!).

Or for popsicles, you can yse really, really soft PUPPY Kongs (the blue type) not the normal Kongs . . . preferably ones that have been put in freezer before hand.

Hope this helps!

Get a hard toy (ie bone, kong, nylabone etc.) AND a soft toy (ie, rope, stuffed animal, etc). Be careful with rawhide and ALWAYS supervise; rawhides are often hard for dogs to digest, and can get lodged in the intestines. DO NOT buy greenies, as they have been found to have the same problems and worse, and have actually been sued by several people. Also, do not give household items to chew (you can give plastic bottles, but always supervise), as your dog will not be able to differentiate between your good work shoes and the old ones you donated to his chewing cause.

The combination of toys like this does 2 things: It helps with the chewing and gives your dog a choice, but also helps prevent tartar and plaque buildup on your dogs new teeth.

The best advice I can give as a long time dog owner is to get a hard toy(like "puppy keys"-you can buy them at any pet store-my pup loved them and still chews on them after being a year and a half old) DO NOT give your puppy rawhide; rawhides are extremely hard for puppies to digest, and can get lodged in the intestines.

A couple of other great cheap things are baby oralgel to numb the gums and ice cubes to chew on.

these worked great on my puppy and now she goes crazy for ice cubes and I have never had a problem with her chewing on any of my stuff-only her toys.

I like the kong toys. They come in a ton of sizes for different breeds and different aged dogs. I like them a lot because they usually last a long time and they have a wide selection of the kind of toy. They have some that you can put a treat on the inside and it keeps your dog entertained for hours. They are long lasting and not too expensive.

Rope tug toys are good for this.

Also, get him some natural chews that are safe to ingest. I recommend dried sting ray tail, bullstix, deer antler, and other tough, long lasting chews. You can order these from http://www.petextras.com Be careful of rawhide, greenies, and things of that nature as they do not digest well.

If you keep your puppy busy with things he is supposed to chew on he will not have time to tear up your belongings.

Give him lots of things to chew. Rawhide bones are great. If he doesn't have something to chew on, he'll chew your stuff -- shoes, furniture, whatever. I've found those hollow ceramic bones are great when you stuff them with some peanut butter. Keeps the dog busy for a long time and satisfies his chewing urge. Most pet stores are loaded with things that will help.

I asked the same question of my vet recently for my 6 month old labradoodle. Her advice was a large supply of cheap tennis balls (throw away once broken), a small frozen water bottle, (throw away once punctured), and a KONG toy.

My dog loves the tennis balls and we have been through many of the $1 bags at our local Dollar General. The KONG toy took a little more getting used to, but she is now gnawing on it instead of my coffee table.

Good luck and watch out for your electrical cords. :)

I just got a puppy to.He is 14 weeks.I got him all kinds of dog toys. Just get chew bones and all kinds of things. What my dog likes best is the plastic toys that squeak. If he chews on something he is not suppose to tell him no and take it.He will learn what he is allowed to chew on and what he is not.

I recommend a Kong toy. They have specialty ones for teething puppies. You can put peanut butter in them and freeze them. The cold rubber is soothing on their little puppy gums. I just got one for my puppy and he loves it.
