It does seem that a lot of people now don't care, don't want to care and think it is much "cooler" to be thick. Especially if you look at advertisements and people's blogs and the like. Why does our society seem to be "dumbing itself down"? Does nobody else get as angry about it as my best friend and myself?

I do appreciate the people who have taken the time to answer, in particular, those who agree. Hopefully, one day, the world shall unite and again appreciate the humble written word rather than it all disintegrating into aforementioned "textspeak". With the popular attitude like it is though, I fear people will soon only grunt at each other.

Well, I find it rather frustrating myself. Every where I look I see insults to my own intelligence, especially in the media. I see people practically worshipping idiocy, and no one giving a damn. I read about illiteracy, and shake my head. One day I saw in a magazine something about computer brains and the notion of "artificial intelligence" It made me think of a quote I read that goes. "We ought to be less concerned about artifical intelligence and more concerned with human stupidity"

Yes - I find it vastly annoying.

I co-manage an online community and we are constantly asking people to give up the net speak and learn the basics of spelling, grammar and punctuation. You'd be amazed at the excuses we get why people cannot be bothered. The largest one is apathy.

I call stores when their sign out front has an apostrophe where there shouldn't be one, or someone misspelled a word, unless it was clearly done on purpose.

I mess up sometimes - keyboard tyopese - but I think the only way to get anywhere is to be able to present yourself coherently- both verbally and in written form.

Those who cannot still won't get jobs. I'm suprised they don't realize that not caring about the basics makes them come off as ignorant, stupid, and lazy. I'm personally not hiring someone who cannot be bothered to spell.

If they have a learning disorder, that's one thing. But I know several people with learning disorders; they take extra effort to make sure their spelling and grammar are correct.

there's no excuse, in my opinion

In my college English classes, we revise each others' rough drafts. I can't count how many times I see "net speak" in research papers. It has gotten to a point where I just want to scream. I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to grammar and spelling. Something that makes me laugh is how most immigrants I know speak better English than the people who say that immigrants should learn to speak English.

Anger is a strong emotion - but I do find it frustrating that so many people don't care to take the time to either spell right the first time or to run spell check. There are also way too many shortcuts being used - such as "R" for "Are" - is it that hard to type the three letters out?

I could not agree with you more. That is my biggest pet peeve!! I don't think the school systems help much, either. I know quite a few people with a four year college education that still have a hard time spelling rather simple words. It drives me insane, too!!

We cannot control others but, I agree with you. I would much rather take the extra two seconds to spell a word correctly than to use text speak. I feel that it's annoying and just skip over the Q's that are written in that manner.

wellt he typed word is different from the spoken language in my situation, I type poorly at best and at times it is much easier to shorten words into internet shorthand Ie. IMO ppl etc etc.

Advertising companies are tryign to appeal to the younger generation where internet and cell phone slang is the norm.

But i do agree that we are becoming a lazier people overall

I agree, I'm not always perfect myself, but at least I try. Some people seem not to care, or are just really, really stupid!!! I think that it is a real turn off, and don't generally talk or chat w/ people like that.
